Sailor Pen Co celebrates its 110th anniversary in 2021 with the release of limited edition commemorative fountain pens in three different styles, based on the three cornerstones of Sailor’s corporate identity: Authenticity, Technology and Design.
Premium (21k)
A 21-karat gold barrel that matches with Sailor’s original 21-karat gold nib, made possible by the fountain pen manufacturing techniques cultivated since the company’s founding and a passion for making authentic products. The matte finishing enhances its original beauty and provides a relaxed appearance in a calming environment, and the well-balanced design creates excitement for a more natural writing flow.
Kurogane [Stainless Steel Black]
By adopting new electrolytic colouring technology, deep black colour is achieved while maintaining the metallic feel. Unlike plating and painting, an ultra-thin black oxide film is grown on the surface of the material by using light interference, so there is no risk of peeling. The original texture of metal is retained, and has excellent durability and weather resistance. A gem brought about by the challenging spirit that always aims for the highest level of quality with the fusion of new technology backed by tradition.
Shirogane [Sterling Silver 925]
The word “Sterling” is derived from the British currency Sterling pound and means reliable and genuine. Silver has been passed down for generations and adopted as a reliable and unchanging material, together with Sailor’s anchor which symbolizes trust and hope. As the material gains brilliance and value through daily use, it becomes the perfect tool for daily utilization. The white shine of Shirogane creates a sense of dignity and beauty and represents a light of hope that illuminates the future.
A commitment by Sailor to bring the best writing experience, the specially designed 21-karat bi-colour gold nib commemorates the 110th anniversary with Sailor’s emblem “Anchor” and “110th” engraved on the nib. The “feather touch” writing comfort that glides on the paper is a masterpiece unique to fountain pens.
Sailor’s Anchor, a symbol of trust and hope, represents Sailor’s reliable quality, incorporating the strength of technology and delicate Japanese aesthetics. The Premium model has a gold anchor floating in the cap finial, and the Kurogane and Shirogane models have bi-colour assertive plate anchor embedded as a symbol of constancy.
The cap center band is engraved with Sailor’s new logotype, based on the spirits of the company’s early days, and reflects the Japanese sense of finding beauty through simplification. The triple lines symbolize the three cornerstones of Sailor’s corporate identity.
To protect the clipless pen from damage, a decorative ring engraved with “Since 1911” acts as a detent and prevents the pen from rolling.
Each pen is laser engraved with a serial number on the barrel ornament to signify the limited edition commemorative product. The Premium is limited to 110 pens, and the Kurogane and Shirogane are limited to 1,100 pens each.
An exclusive handcrafted solid chestnut box accompanies the anniversary pen. Chestnut wood has been used as building material since ancient times as it is highly durable and resistant to moisture. Inside the box, the fountain pen is carefully protected by a pen wrap made of Azabu (hemp cloth made from cannabis plant), a durable and sustainable material with excellent moisture absorption and quick-drying properties. The cloth becomes softer and more comfortable as time passes, increasing its elegant luster and whiteness.
As part of the 110th anniversary, Sailor BLUE Dawn is set as the colour of the new Corporate Identity. The colour is reminiscent of the scenery observed in the sea before dawn in Setouchi, the place of establishment. With this in mind, Sailor plans to set sail for the world that extends beyond the sea to create reliable, quality technology combined with the graceful aesthetic sense of Japanese handicrafts. A bottle of Sailor BLUE Dawn is included in the Premium set.
