105 illustrious years have passed since the establishment of Pilot Pen, and today, the brand stands proudly among the echelons of the world’s most renowned manufacturers of writing instruments. Pilot Pen unveils its Pilot Limited-Edition 105th Anniversary “White Rabbit” Fountain Pen, limited to just 100 sets worldwide. This masterpiece is not only launched to mark its significant milestone, but also as an expression of appreciation to its loyal supporters over the past century and beyond.
The Pilot Limited-Edition 105th Anniversary “White Rabbit” Fountain Pen is meticulously handcrafted by Maki-e artisan, Masahiro Yamada, from the prestigious Kokkokai group. A range of Maki-e techniques, refined over decades, is used to achieve an impeccable finish. This latest release speaks volume of the complexity in artistry, and dedication poured into crafting this exquisite work of art.
Paying homage to the white rabbit, widely regarded as an auspicious creature in Japan and around the world, this commemorative fountain pen depicts an iconic scene from “White Rabbit of Inaba”, a tale originating from Kojiki, an ancient Japanese book of myths. In this scene, a deity also known as ‘Master of the Great Land’ is portrayed helping the white rabbit in his predicament. The folktale reflects important themes such as “honesty” and “kindness”, qualities that resonate with and hold great significance in today’s world of diversity and inclusiveness. Furthermore, through the pen, Pilot Pen aspires to champion individual success, as exemplified by the rabbit’s adeptness at “leaping” beyond challenging circumstances.
The Pilot Limited-Edition 105th Anniversary “White Rabbit” Fountain Pen comes in an Emperor vest-type pen body. The white rabbit on the pen barrel is meticulously designed using an intricate Taka Maki-e (Raised Maki-e) technique that imparts a high-relief texture to the animal character, elevating its presence from the surface with exquisite beauty. Delicate depictions of the background landscape is achieved through a combination of Maki-e techniques namely Togidashi Maki-e (Burnished Maki-e) and Raden (Mother-of Pearl) for the wave patterns, and Shishiai Togidashi-Taka Maki-e4 (Combined Raised and Burnished Maki-e) for the rocks. Together, these techniques add depth and texture to the fountain pen’s appearance and play a vital role in bringing the design to life.
The fountain pen cap is also given the same elaborate Maki-e techniques. Utilising the Togidashi Maki-e and Taka Maki-e techniques, enhanced with platinum powder finishing, the cap elegantly captures the poignant moment from the “White Rabbit of Inaba” tale, depicting the benevolent aid provided by the ‘Master Of The Great Land’ to the white rabbit.
Another notable highlight of the Pilot Limited-Edition 105th Anniversary “White Rabbit” Fountain Pen is the unique engraving on its 18K gold, number 50 pen nib, that commemorates its significant 105th Anniversary milestone.
