Only a few athletes are as celebrated and honoured as three-time Heavyweight Champion of the world, Muhammad Ali, whose legendary moments in sports and civil rights activism made him one of the most influential athletes and humanitarians of the 20th century. As an athlete, Ali shook up the world with his strength, skill and personality, becoming Heavyweight Champion of the world at just 22 years old. He was known for challenging opponents both in the ring and out, utilising his wit to stoke media sentiment and notoriety. His greatest triumph, however, resulted from his humanitarian efforts. As an outspoken and tireless advocate for civil rights, he sacrificed a long period of his career to stand up for what he believed in. Ali transcended sport and reached a level of influence few others have attained when he made the leap from sports icon to generational role model.

Crafted from precious black resin, the cap resembles a boxing sack while the barrel is inspired by the bandages boxers use to wrap and protect their hands under the boxing gloves. The cap features various design elements, such as a famous exclamation by Ali and a butterfly inspired by this typical fighting style: Float like a Butterfly, Sting like a Bee. The gold-coated pointed cone takes up that notion and is engraved with four lines representing the ropes of a boxing ring. The words ‘ROMA MCMLX’ and ‘MIAMI 1964’ honour Ali’s victories at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and his first heavyweight world championship he won in Miami in 1964. The details of his victory, namely having won in the seventh round by technical knock-out, can be found on the cap ring. The boxer’s victory pose is engraved alongside the inscription ‘TKO-W 7 (15)’ on the gold-coated cap ring. The cap is shaped like a punchbag and adorned with an engraved butterfly. The skeletonised clip, shaped like a boxing championship belt, is inscribed with ‘ALI’. A laurel wreath underneath the clip symbolises the triumphant victories of the great boxer. To celebrate his first title, the Montblanc emblem in White resin is adorned with the number ‘1’ in honour of Ali’s first world title of his boxing career. To underline this success, the clip is shaped like a boxing championship belt and bears his name. The handcrafted solid Au 585 yellow gold nib shows a boxing glove.
