The first full moon of January is traditionally known as the Wolf Moon, a name inspired by the wolves whose howls were once heard through the cold and quiet winter nights.
For Namiki’s 2026 Limited Edition, this evocative winter scene is transformed into an exquisite work of Maki-e artistry — a solitary white wolf standing beneath a luminous full moon, surrounded by moonlit trees, wild grasses and distant mountains.
The wolf symbolises strength and unity, reflecting the bond of the pack, as well as independence and the courage to follow one’s own path. These contrasting qualities are beautifully captured in the image of the lone wolf beneath the endless night sky.
Meticulously rendered in Hira Maki-e, the white wolf features layers of lacquer and silver powder that create subtle texture and depth, with a delicate piece of Raden (mother-of-pearl) forming its eye. The surrounding winter landscape combines Hira Maki-e and Togidashi Maki-e, while silver powder and Raden accents evoke the soft shimmer of moonlight and the sparkling stillness of a winter night.
Through the extraordinary skill of Kokkokai artisans, a fleeting winter scene becomes a miniature world of light, shadow and silence.
